Stuttgart is a pretty ideal setting for photos. Old buildings, confined spaces, lots of pedestrians walking around, the perfect mix for a street photographer. While you will find most people looking boring and the same, if you watch close enough, the odd balls stand out long enough for you to pull the trigger and trip the shutter.
Königstrasse is the shopping street and walking avenue that cuts down the center of the old city. People of all different shapes and sizes are constantly walking down in a parade of conformity with the few exceptions standing out in bright colors, funny masks. Street Musicians play their tunes scattered down the side trying to make ends meet. It can be a very commercial and boring place but also a place of constant human interaction from all walks of life. The last couple of weeks we were in Stuttgart, we spent some time everyday walking up and down this interesting avenue.
In a city as rich as Stuttgart, the relationship and interaction between rich and poor, between the have’s and the have nots, is a remarkable thing to observe. There is plenty of bankers and beggars walking side by side, occupying the same space, same air, and same streets. For us, juxtaposition is one of the most important things to remember while taking photos of people living their everyday lives.
Most of the photos were taken while we were out skating and filming for this issue. Maybe this will give you an idea of life in the streets of Stuttgart – may it won’t, and you will just have to travel there and see why the Königstrasse bomb is so much fun.
